The 224 steam engine is also known as a Prairie-type locomotive. This mid-size steam engine is a dependable locomotive and it shares its boiler casting with the 1666 steam engine.
The 224 was introduced in the first year of Lionel's postwar production era, 1945. Its number and boiler casting were carryover items from the prewar era. Practically all of the updates or modifications centered on the internal components.
An interesting piece of Lionel history surrounds the Prairie steamer. The first and only catalogued postwar set from 1945 -- O gauge set # 463W -- was headed up by the 224 Prairie steamer. Lionel's final catalogued postwar set from 1969 -- set # 11760 -- was pulled by the 2029 Prairie steamer.
Features
The 224 steam locomotive has the following standard features: a black-painted, die-cast boiler with a 2-6-2 wheel arrangement, detailed driving wheel hardware, Baldwin disk drive wheels with nickel rims, die-cast trailing truck, three-position E-unit, headlight, wire handrails plus an ornamental bell and a simulated whistle. The number board can be found on a metal plate under the windows on the cab.
The 224 was initially offered with a 2466W tender, but soon changed to the fancier 2466WX which contained additional deck railings. Both tenders contain a whistle.
A quick way to identify a 1945 model versus its 1946 counterpart is to view the cab floor on the back of the steam engine. The 1945 model has a floor which is 'squared-off' along the back edge -- similar to the prewar version. The 1946 model has a more rounded and elaborate cab floor.

FALCON CAMERA MODEL NO. 4
UTILITY MFG. CO. INC
&
ORIGINAL FALCON CASE
Spartus was a camera maker originally based in New York and named Utility Manufacturing Company.
The Spartus name is one in a sea of names used by this company. It started out as the Utility Manufacturing Co. in New York in the mid 1930's. They were sold out to Spartus in the 1940's, who also operated the company under the names Falcon Camera Corp.,and Spencer Co. In 1951 the company was taken over by the sales manager harold Rubin, and it became Herold Manufacturing. Spartus Corp. began as Utility Mfg. Company of New York around the mid 1930s. It was during the 1940s that Spartus bought out Utility, so there are cameras to be found under the Utility name as well. In 1951, Spartus was purchased by an employee, Harold Rubin, who renamed the company Herold Mfg. Co. Jack Galter, former President of Spartus, started a new company called Galter Products about the same time. Both companies ended sometime in the 1960s.
Falcon brochures call it the Automatic model because of its self-erecting front.
Pre 1940 model has black art deco shutter face.

Great Collectible Item!
A swagger stick is a short stick or riding crop usually carried by a uniformed person as a symbol of authority. A swagger stick is shorter than a staff or cane, and is usually made from rattan.
Originally, the swagger stick was a functional implement used to direct military drill and maneuvers, or to administer physical punishment. In the Roman army, a short vine wood staff called a vitis was carried and used for corporal punishment by Centurions (often career soldiers), but not by higher officers (often from the socio-political elite). Nowadays it is more often a traditional visual attribute. Swagger sticks are most familiarly carried by military officers or more senior non-commissioned officers. They are also often carried by officers in police and paramilitary forces.
Many Military Bands, especially in Infantry Regiment, use a pace stick in lieu of a band mace for the Drum Major. Is is also used by male tour guides at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida, where its purpose is to give male tour guides something to hold and use to direct guests' attention to, while female tour guides use a riding crop.
Trench art is commonly defined as any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians, where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences.
Includes decorated shell and bullet casings and items carved from wood and bone.
To the uninitiated, all trench art, by definition, was made by a soldier sitting in a trench in France during the First World War, in the midst of a bombardment. To the cynics, it was all made in the 1920s by enterprising French and Belgian citizens. The reality is, naturally, a mix of these extremes, and everything in between, and spans conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the present day.
Although the practice flourished during World War I, the term 'trench art' is also used to describe souvenirs manufactured by service personnel during World War II and beyond. Some items manufactured by soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians during earlier conflicts have been retrospectively described as trench art.

IRIDESCENT PAPERWEIGHT SIGNED 661 1974
ORIENT & FLUME:
Orient & Flume produces fine art glass for the collector. These signed pieces capture nature's inspiration in both iridescent and crystal clear glass. Nationally acclaimed for its excellence in design since 1972, the glass of Orient & Flume utilizes both traditional and contemporary motifs and can be found in the permanent collections of the most prestigious museums in the world.
About 1893, one characteristic home with a carriage house was built in the historic Oriental section of town. Located between Orient Street and Flume Street, this site was destined to play an important role in the story Orient & Flume. In l972, the house was purchased by Douglas Boyd and was transformed into an art glass studio.
By 1973 the carriage house proved to be too small for a rapidly growing business and was relocated to 2161 Park Avenue. The work of Orient & Flume can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, the Chrysler Museum, the Corning Glass Museum and fine stores and galleries throughout the world.
