PRIME MINISTER WINSTON CHURCHILL AUTOGRAPH

winston churchill image.jpg

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, FRS, PC (Can) was born November 30, 1874 - died January 24, 1965. Chruchill was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. A noted statesman, orator and strategist, Churchill was also a soldier in the British Army. A prolific author, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his own historical writings. As an officer in the British Army, he fought at the Battle of Omdurman and during the Second Boer War. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade and Home Secretary during the Liberal governments. In the First World War Churchill served in numerous positions, as First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Air. He also served in the British Army on the Western Front and commanded the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain in May 1940, he became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and led the British war effort against the Axis powers. His speeches were a great inspiration to the embattled Allied forces. After losing the 1945 election, Churchill became the leader of the opposition. In 1951, Churchill again became Prime Minister before finally retiring in 1955. Upon his death, he was granted the honour of a state funeral which saw one of the largest assemblies of politicians in the world.

PRIME MINISTER WILLIAM GLADSTONE AUTOGRAPHED ENVELOPE

Gladstone.jpg

William Ewart Gladstone was born December 29, 1809 – died May 19, 1898.  Gladstone was a British Liberal Party statesman and Prime Minister (1868–74, 1880–85, 1886 and 1892–94). Gladstone is famous for his intense rivalry with Benjamin Disraeli, who rose to become Conservative Leader. The rivalry was not only political, but also personal. When Disraeli died, Gladstone proposed a state funeral, but Disraeli's will asked for him to be buried next to his wife, to which Gladstone replied, "As [Disraeli] lived, so he died — all display, without reality or genuineness." Disraeli, for his part, said that GOM (which stood for Grand Old Man, Gladstone's nickname), really stood for "God's Only Mistake". The English statesman was famously at odds with Queen Victoria for much of his career. She once complained "He always addresses me as if I were a public meeting." Gladstone was known affectionately by his supporters as the "Grand Old Man" or "The People's William". He is still regarded as one of the greatest British prime ministers, with Winston Churchill and others citing Gladstone as their inspiration.

WILHELM MIKLAS AUTOGRAPH

WilhelmMiklas image.jpg

Wilhelm Miklas was born October 15, 1872 – died March 20, 1956. Wilhelm Miklas was an Austrian politician who served as the third President of Austria from 1928 until its annexation by Nazi Germany in the Anschluss 1938. On December 10, 1928 he was elected the President of Austria, a role he served in until the position ceased to exist ten years later when Austria was annexed by Germany in the Anschluss. In 1930 Miklas appeared on a set of Austrian postage stamps. Miklas was highly unpopular among Austrian Nazis because he refused to commute the death sentences imposed on assassins of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss after the failed putsch in 1934. Miklas was disliked by many members of the Austrian Nazi Party at this point for his initial refusal to appoint them custodians of Austria, and it ended up being future Waffen-SS colonel Otto Skorzeny who protected Miklas during the Anschluss. He was placed under house arrest and abandoned the political sphere. Miklas died on March 20, 1956 in Vienna.
